SUMMER CAMPS
Leader in Training (LIT) 1 & 2

Registration opens January 3, 2024!

The Leader in Training (LIT) program at Camp Chris is a unique and transformative experience designed for young individuals who aspire to become leaders, develop essential life skills, and make a positive impact in their communities. This program serves as a bridge between camper and counselor, providing a platform for personal growth, leadership development, and a deeper understanding of the camp experience.

LIT 1 is where the learning begins! LIT 1’s get the best of both worlds-–time learning and working with the younger campers, plus a chance to have some fun when they join our Senior Camp field trips on Wednesdays.

LIT 2 is for leaders who are focused on getting the next level leadership skills–they are granted more independence and encouraged to develop their own voice and programming skills with the campers. During this program, the LIT 2’s spend more time with specific groups, building relationships and skills.

Program Requirements:

LIT 1:

  • LIT 1 campers must be at least entering grade 9 or higher in fall 2024.

LIT 2:

  • Potential LIT 2’s must have taken part in at least two weeks of our LIT 1 program, or be able to show a history of similar leadership experience.
  • LIT 2 candidates must be entering grade 10 in fall 2024.

*Please note: for those LITs interested in working at Summer at St. John’s, you must be 16 by the opening of camp to be eligible to hire. You can find out more about working at Summer at St. John’s prep here.

Program Highlights:

Leadership Development: The LIT program is centered on building skills. Participants engage in workshops and activities that focus on effective communication, problem-solving, teamwork, and decision making. LITs will build resource binders, and be visited by top tier leaders from the community who will talk about their leadership philosophy and practice.

Hands On Experience: LITs have the opportunity to work closely with experienced camp counselors, gaining first hand experience in planning and leading camp activities. This

exposure helps them understand the responsibilities and expectations of camp leadership.

Mentorship: Each LIT will be mentored by LIT staff and Senior Counselors, providing guidance, support and feedback throughout the program. This mentorship fosters a sense of belonging and personal growth.

Community Service: The LIT program emphasizes the importance of giving back.  Participants engage in community service projects, encouraging them to be socially responsible and compassionate leaders.

Personal Growth: Through self-reflection, goal setting, and personal challenges, LITs gain a deeper understanding of their strengths and areas for growth. They develop self-confidence and resilience.

Teamwork: LITs collaborate on projects and activities, honing their teamwork and communication skills. They learn to appreciate the diverse strengths each team member brings to the table.

Core Values: The LIT program instills and reinforces core values such as kindness, community, honesty, and respect. These values serve as the foundation for ethical leadership and personal development.

The Leader in Training program at Camp Chris aims to achieve the following outcomes:

Leadership Skills: Participants develop strong leadership skills, including effective communication, decision-making, and problem-solving abilities.

Personal Growth: LITs experience significant personal growth, building self-confidence, and discovering their unique strengths and potential.

Community Involvement: The program fosters a sense of social responsibility by engaging LITs in community service activities.

Camp Leadership: LITs gain valuable experience in camp leadership, preparing them for potential roles as future counselors.

Values-Driven Leadership: The program reinforces ethical leadership and encourages LITs to be role models who embody core values.

The Leader in Training program at Camp Chris is a remarkable opportunity for young individuals to become leaders, make lasting friendships, and contribute positively to their communities.  It’s a transformative experience that shapes tomorrow’s leaders today.  Join us to discover the path to leadership and personal growth through the LIT program.
