Important Information Regarding Summer Math Courses
A summer math course offers students an excellent opportunity to advance their skills and prepare for the next academic year. These fast-paced, honors-level courses deliver the full 60-hour math curriculum in a highly condensed format, meeting at least four hours per day, three to four days per week, over four to five weeks.
Eligibility Requirements:
To enroll, students must:
- Maintain a 92% or higher average on assessments throughout the academic year.
- Receive a recommendation from their current math teacher.
- Consistently complete homework and classwork assignments on time while staying current with all material.
- Maintain their grades for the remainder of the academic year; a drop in performance may result in losing eligibility for the summer course.
Advancement:
Students must successfully complete the course to advance their math placement for the following year.
This program is designed for motivated learners ready to take their math skills to the next level.
Geometry Course Description:
This Honors level course offers a full year of geometry for the student who wishes to complete geometry in the summer in order to advance to Algebra 2/Trigonometry the following fall. This course is an intensive 60 hours of instruction at the honors level and demands the full dedication and commitment of the student.
Topics will include:
- Measurement
- Inductive and deductive reasoning
- Lines, triangles, congruence, similarity, polygons, transformations, formulas for perimeter and area
- Spatial reasoning
- Trigonometry
Substantial work must be completed outside of class time in order to master the necessary topics. To take this course, students are required to have completed a full year of Algebra 1 with a high final average, and must have the recommendation of their Algebra 1 teacher. There will be weekly tests and a cumulative exam will be administered at the end of the class.
Students will receive a grade, however, no credits will be assigned. For students who do not attend St. John’s, a letter will be mailed to their school showing the attendance record and final exam grade. Students are required to have a graphing calculator.
All classes start at 8:00am, and end at 2:00 pm and will run on the following dates:
- Week 1: Monday June 8, Tuesday June 9, Wednesday June 10, Thursday June 11
- Week 2: Monday June 15, Tuesday June 16, Wednesday June 17, Thursday June 18
- Week 3: Monday June 22, Tuesday June 23
Students should bring snacks, bottled drinks, and lunch.
